This is a truly stunning party dress from the 1950's in near-perfect condition, by Wally Williams and tagged "Smart Miss". A cloud of dusty rose chiffon with tiny pleats over the bust, a fitted waist, and a gorgeous full skirt with the same exquisite detail as the bustline. There are three layers to this dress: A pearl-colored taffeta lining on the inside, followed by a layer of ivory tulle and topped with sheer dusty-rose pleated organza or chiffon (with a hint of brown) for a vintage look that is surprisingly modern if yuo've been watching the catwalks lately - especially the color and the bust. EXTREMELY flattering. Metal zipper up the back. I found this dress at an estate sale in Preston Hollow. After throwing a tantrum when I realized there was no way this dress was going to fit me, I decided to buy it anyway. Judging from the lack of underarm wear and its immaculate condition it looks as if this dress may have only been worn once or twice, if at all. The photos do not do it justice - it is actually more sheer, delicate, and slightly lighter in color.
Measurements are taken with the dress perfectly flat: 16" across fullest part of chest, 12.5" across smallest part of waist. From that point down you can be as big as a house - the skirt flares from the waist and will accommodate a full petticoat to make it stand out as far as you like. The skirt measures exactly 30" from the waist and the bodice measures 15" from the top of the sleeve strap to the waist seam. It is a bit small in the shoulders - if you have broad shoulders (like me) it will not hang correctly - this dress was meant for a small-framed person. There are a few tiny holes in the tulle (middle layer) portion of the skirt toward the bottom, which I have photographed. Incredibly, it has no stains and no musty odor whatsoever. It does, however, need a serious date wtih an iron. I lightly ironed the inner and middle layers of the skirt to inspect for damage, which is when I discovered the small holes (they're invisible otherwise). There is no damage at all on the outer layer. Notice all the layers of fabric in the gathered waist, the hand-stitched reinforcement strips in the inner bodice, and the delightful old tags. This dress is truly a treasure and I'll bet the original wearer looked like a dream in it. It came with some kind of velvet sash that I don't think is part of the original dress. If I were to put a sash on it at all, I'd use a wide dark-brown or black satin ribbon.
Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions - I check my e-mail daily and will be happy to answer all questions to the best of my ability, and to send additional photos if you want to see more details of specific areas, etc. Unfortunately I cannot offer returns unless there are extraordinary circumstances, in which case I'd try to work something out -- but I cannot make any promises. The dress will be wrapped in acid-free tissue, boxed carefully, and shipped via Fed-Ex Ground. |
