The properly dressed young girl seems to become a young woman almost at this very moment. The mother protects, but does not control. PHOTOGRAPHER: Gertrude Kasebier was born in Des Moines, Iowa in 1852. She was an energetic and curious child who seemed to love art. She trained as a painter. She soon became a photographer though her artistic training influenced her compositions. She experimented with a variety of print and process techniques. She was an associate of Alfred Stieglitz who first printed this image. She died in 1934 leaving an indelible mark on the art of photography.
