16thC. Anthony Wierix
/ The walk on Emmaus
A signed quality
engraving
One of the major projects in the
engraving history of the 16th century was the Natalis bible. It is considered
not only as a monument of the 16th century's book illustration but also as one
of the greatest achievements of the Flemish graphical art (Delen page 101).
These engravings testimony of the virtuoso engraving style of the Wierix who
encountered no difficulties at all. This was the turning point of the copper
engraving in favour to the woodcut.

Engraver:
Anthony Wierix (1552-1624)
Signed in full as engraver and publisher.
The Wierix are important in Flemish print history. The brothers where natural
talents in engraving and so important for the history of engraving in the 16th
century. They began at a very early age and developed a really virtuoso style.
Design was a very natural thing for them and there technical is mostly
accumulated in small very detailed and well-done prints. Some experts attribute
the quick victory of of the burin-engraving in favour towards woodcuts to there
combined efforts. The style of Anthony is larger and more free, especially in
some of his large plates.
Inventor:
Mostly after a paintings of Bernardo Passari, a few after Marten de Vos.
Publisher
Martinus Nuntius in 1593
Author:
Hieronymus Natalis, S.J. (Jerome Nadal, 1507-1580, one of the first ten
members of the Society of Jesus)
Subject:
From one of the most important ever illustrated biblical books --
Title in Latin: "Evangelicae historiae imagines ex ordine Evangeliorum, quae
toto anno in missae sacrificio recitantur, in ordinem temporis vitae Christi
digestae"
Rough Translation: "Illustrations of Gospel Stories ..." Antwerp, 1593.
Ignatius Loyola suggested to his friend Jerome Nadal to commission a series of
engravings that would do for religion what the scientific illustrations of the
day were doing for scientists -- use perspective and annotations to draw the
reader into the Biblical stories so that they could become real and be an aide
in daily meditation. This was the first book where the illustrations, rather
than the word, were conceived of as the primary medium for teaching. This
engraving was published in 1593, after the deaths of both Loyola and Nadal.
The plate has a
picture with a legend in Latin that explained the picture to the initiate just
as the scientific engravings of the day explained scientific tools and theories.
The art of
the Wierix is among the best to find.
Hieronymus and his brother Johannes started with unbelievable
accurate copperplates engravings after Dürer. Their masterpieces
in this field: Adam and Eve, and The knight riding with dead and
devil where made circa 1566, unbelievable he was capable to make
this quality at that young age. Johannes (born in 1549) actually
signed Aetas 14 or aetas 16 to indicate he was only 14-16 when he
made this work.
Hieronymus
Wierix is especially known for his very delicate religious prints
on a very small scale. As he followed Dürer in his early years,
here he was probably influenced by the German small masters like
Beham, Aldegrever...a.s.o.
Otherwise
then the German masters, Wierix quality is not yet fully
expressed in the prices for his work. Although his larger plates
make over one thousand USD, im pleased to me able to offer you
some smaller works at very affordable prices.
