Please request an invoice for all auctions won within 7 days to receive your discounted price with discounted shipping. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Nepeta cataria (Catnip, True Catnip, Catmint or Field Balm) is an herb resembling mint in appearance, with grayish-green leaves; the flowers are white, spotted with purple. It has been introduced to many countries, and is now a widespread weed in some areas, including the USA. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ When cats come into contact with the leaves or stems of catnip, they will rub in it, roll over it, paw at it, chew it, lick it, leap about and purr, often salivating copiously. Some cats will also growl and meow. This reaction only lasts for a few minutes before the cats are too high, fall asleep, run off in a shot or loose interest. It takes up to two hours for the cat to "reset" and then it can come back to the catnip and have the same response as before. Young kittens and older cats are less likely to have a reaction to catnip, but big cats, such as tigers, seem to be extremely sensitive to it. It is said that only 3 in 4 have the "catnip gene" that causes their reaction to the weed.  (I have 12 kitties, and all of them love it!) Cat toys can contain catnip and some cats love to play with them while others are just not interested. Cat owners do not need to worry about allowing their cats access to catnip because there are, for the most part, no negative side effects to doing so. However, some cats become overly excited when exposed to catnip, so aging or overly obese cats with heart troubles should be kept away from it. A diabetic cat can also experience complications from catnip. As some get excited, they can also become too playful, and are more unable, or unwilling to control their teeth and claws.  So beware of the stoned kitties!  Besides those side effects mentioned, catnip is a health dietary supplement and can also aid in digestion. ~~~A study conducted at Iowa State University suggests that pure nepetalactone, a constituent of the essential oil of Nepeta cataria, may be 10 times as effective at repelling mosquitos as the common repellant, DEET.
